Hidden Fortress

Rating: 3.5
Director: Akira Kurosawa
Not his best film, nor his most entertaining,  but this film did have a lot of what i liked about Kurosawa, and a reason why i watch all of his films, even his non samurai ones. Essentially this story is about bumbling idiots who discover gold hidden in sticks. Literally they are inside tree branches and shit. So being dumb and greedy they go and look for more. They meet Toshiro Mifune's character who is mighty proud and strong with his short shorts. Suffice to say its also not Mifune's most entertaining role either, but its not his worst i've seen. So these knuckleheads go on an adventure with Mifune and his lost princess/leader to reclaim their land and set up their empire. They have to travel through enemy country to do so. Naturally the greedy bumble heads botch that very simple concept by being greedy and stupid, so Mifune has to fight and sometimes kill people to get them there safely. Ultimately though the ending is what surprised me most, since it wasn't a sudden end as some of the Japanese movies have. So a nice ending, to a respectably good movie.
